Research Skills: 07 Presenting your research

Presenting your work correctly

Once you have gathered all your research, it is important you present your work in the correct format. There are many different ways in which your  project can be presented, depending on the type of task you have undertaken and what you are required to include from your assignment brief.

The resources on this page will help you decide what format to use to present your work and successfully meet your assignment brief and project goals.

Written reports

A key feature of reports is the formal structure with each section having its own purpose and style.

Literature reviews

If you are studying at a Higher Education (HE) level, you will need to include a literature review in your research project. The video below explains what is a Literature Review. Check out the other videos in the series to help you write yours.

Present Your Research

When it comes to presenting research there′s the good, the bad, and the messy. Students need to factor in the different elements of a presentation and learn how to draw upon their existing skills to improve their presentation skills for maximum impact.   Present Your Research provides a clever, beautiful workbook packed with real life examples to help students understand the elements of presentations and how to build confidence around them by working through Zina O′Leary′s guided exercises. Presentations are increasingly a key assessment of student research and projects and are one of the core employability skills.

Poster presentations

This short video explains the basics of creating a poster presentation. For further help using PowerPoint, check out this guide from Microsoft:

Recorded presentations

The video below shows you how to record your presentation in the desktop version of PowerPoint. However, if you do not have this option to open in desktop on your device (e.g.Chromebook users) then you can record using Microsoft Stream.

Click on the following  link to see how you can use this option instead. Recording your PowerPoint in Microsoft Stream

Referencing

You will be expected to record all your resources used in your project accurately using a suitable referencing technique. Which one you use will depend on your subject. Most subjects at NPTC use Harvard Referencing, however a full explanation of all the types used in college and links to each guide are available on our NPTC Referencing LibGuide

It is a good idea to get into the habit of recording all sources used in your assignment as you go along. This allows you to develop good academic skills and ensures you do not accidently include information without giving correct attribution.
