An introduction to HE study skills

What is paraphrasing?

If you want to use information from a specific source in an assignment then you generally have two options.  (1) Quote or (2) Paraphrase.

(1) Quotation – “Include the identical writing from the original source within quotation marks and with a citation/reference” (NPTC 2020)

(2) Paraphrasing – To include ideas from an original source by rephrasing into your own words. Remember to cite/reference the original source otherwise your work could be considered as plagiarism.

Tips to help you paraphrase

1. Start your first sentence at a different point from that of the original source

2. Use synonyms (words that mean the same thing)

3. Break the information into separate sentences
