Black History Month

Introduction

Black History Month has been celebrated in the UK every October since 1987.

Black History Month recognises the contribution that Black people have made in British history as well as highlighting the racist aspects of British history such as the transatlantic slave trade and the ongoing impact of the colonial British Empire.

Black History Month is important as Black people have historically been marginalised and ignored in British history. Black history is not separate from or an add-on to British history - it is an integral part of British history, and Black History Month encourages us to recognise this.

This guide provides a selection of resources from the college libraries and online which will help you to explore this important part of British history. It is by no means an exhaustive list, nor is it meant to be.  If you want to find more books and information about this topic and need any help with your research, contact us and #AskALibrarian.
