Quick guide to Microsoft OneNote: Home

What is OneNote?

OneNote is a notetaking application that lets you create digital notebooks.

Think of an A4 Notebook with sectioned tabs and this is what OneNote is in its simplest form. However, there are a few extra tools built in to help with organisation and productivity, including  search options to quickly find information within your notebook, dictation features, and freeform insertion of text or images, to name but a few.

It can also Sync to the cloud and allows you to access your notes from any device or share them with others.

OneNote is part of Microsoft Office 365. Office 365 is a suite of programs and apps that you can download to your PC or mobile device.  It gives you all of the tools that you need to complete your course including; MS Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Sway, 1TB of free cloud storage in OneDrive, and access to your college e-mail via Outlook.  Use Office 365 to access your work from anywhere and any device.

OneNote Vs Class Notebook

This guide looks at using OneNote for personal use, don't confuse it with ClassNote.

Some courses will use ClassNote, which is an advanced version of OneNote but designed for use in a class setting. It is essentially the same as Onenote but will have been set up by your tutor and will allow collaborative working with your class.

The sections in your ClassNote Notebook may include:

  • Student Notebooks — private notebooks that are shared between each teacher and their individual students. Teachers can access these notebooks at any time, but students cannot see other students’ notebooks.

  • Content Library — a notebook for teachers to share course materials with students. Teachers can add and edit its materials, but for students, the notebook is read-only.

  • Collaboration Space — a notebook for all students and the teacher in the class to share, organize, and collaborate.
