Copyright: Introduction to Copyright

What is copyright?

Copyright symbol public domainCopyright is the name for the form of legal protection that applies to "writing and literary works, art, photography, films, TV, music, web content, sound recordings".

Copyright applies automatically to all such works as soon as they are created. Generally, copyright lasts for seventy years after the death of the creator. At that point, the creator's works enter the public domain, and copyright no longer applies.

It is a criminal offence to reproduce works under copyright protection without permission.  However, there are some exceptions that permit limited reproduction of a work for education purposes.  This guide explains what you can and cannot legally do when copying resources.  It is important to note that both you as an individual and the College can be held responsible and subject to prosecution if copyright laws are ignored.
