College systems: quickstart guide for students: WEST

What is WEST?

WEST is the Wales Essential Skills Toolkit.   The toolkit gives you opportunities to improve your communication and number skills.  When you start your college course you may be asked to login to WEST to complete an essential skills screening tool.  This will provide you and your lecturers with an assessment of your current skills and an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) to improve your skills and understanding.

WEST contains learning materials that you can work through at your own pace.  As everyone's skills levels are different, the ILP will be unique to you and the learning materials that you access will be selected to help you to improve in the areas where you need it most.   As you progress, the system will update the tasks and you will be able to complete a diagnostic skills check to see how much your skills have improved.

WEST is fully bilingual and you can access the toolkit in Welsh or English.
