E-books: About e-books

What are e-books?

Woman reading e-book in hammockE-books are full-text electronic versions of physical books which can be read on a computer, phone, tablet or e-reader. They can usually be read either online or downloaded to read offline.

There are many benefits to using e-books including:

  • the ability to access books without visiting the library
  • they can be accessed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
  • no need to carry heavy books
  • you can search within the full-text for particular keywords

NPTC Libraries provide access to hundreds of e-books from several suppliers. Our main e-book platforms are VLeBooks and ProQuest Ebook Central. To access these e-books, you need to log in with your college details. You can also find open access e-books freely available online. You can find more information about finding e-books on the 'Finding e-books' tab.

This guide contains useful information on finding and using e-books, including reading online, downloading and printing, referencing e-books and enabling accessibility features. For more information, ask a librarian.
